Another example of Hexham's long history, Hexham Old Gaol is the earliest recorded purpose-built prison in England, built in 1330-1333. Originally built to hold the Archbishop of York's prisoners, the Gaol is also a great place to explore Hexham's history and learn all about crime and punishment in the Middle Ages.
