I welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement that the biggest ever increase to the national living wage will come into effect in April. The Chancellor previously announced the move back in September, and it is great news that the Prime Minister has now confirmed a date for this new measure. The national living wage will rise by 51p to £8.72 from £8.21; this is the largest increase since it was introduced in April 2016. Nearly 3 million workers will benefit from the increase.
The national living wage is the minimum wage payable to adults aged over 25. 21-24 year olds will receive a 50p pay increase from £7.70 to £8.20 an hour.
I am delighted that the Government is rewarding workers with the pay rise they deserve for their hard work.
