One of the jewels in the Hexham constituency, Prudhoe Castle, is a fantastic example of Northumberland’s past. Built in
the 11th Century following the 1066 Norman conquest, the castle has
been at the centre of many disputes over its ownership throughout its history,
but was arguably most famously owned by the Percy family who took over the
castle in 1398, and made many repairs and additions.
Prudhoe
Castle is particularly remarkable because it was the only castle in
Northumberland to resist the Scots when the head of the Umfraville family- then
in ownership- refused to support William the Lion of Scotland in 1173, leading
to a failed attempt by the Scottish army to take the castle.
