Friday Focus… on Kielder
With the
weekend about to begin, why not spend the weekend in Kielder in the very North
of the County, and find out what the village has to offer?
Set amidst
Europe’s largest forest, Kielder is one of the most exciting areas in Northumberland
for wildlife and with some great pubs and restaurants, like the Boat Inn
Restaurant and the Blackcock Country Inn, a visit to Kielder is a wonderful way to spend a weekend.
Kielder
Observatory is certainly a highlight, having been named as the best place in
England for stargazing. Its powerful telescopes make it the perfect place to
take in the largest area of protected night sky in Europe.
Kielder
Water and Forest Park is a fantastic family attraction, with Europe’s largest
man-made lake and a huge range of water sports, cycling and nature activities
on offer. Keep an eye out for wildlife as well- 50% of England’s red squirrels
live in the park!
Kielder
Water and Forest Park has had a particularly brilliant year, with a record
twelve Osprey chicks hatched. It is well worth a visit to see the ospreys, and
keen bird watchers can also see them on the live webcam or follow their
progress at www.kielderospreys.wordpress.com
And if you
want to get even closer to birds of prey, then why not visit the Birds of Prey
Centre, home to more than 60 birds, to see flying demonstrations and take part
in a hawk walk?
At the
Kielder Salmon Centre, up to 900,000 salmon are bred each year, or why not take
a walk along the former Border Counties Railway line to the Kielder Viaduct?
Whatever
your interests, there is something for everyone - so if you’re looking for
something to do this weekend, visit Kielder!
