Monday 26th
February-Sunday 11th March is Fairtrade Fortnight, and this week I
attended an event in Parliament to celebrate the start of the event. Fairtrade
Fortnight aims to encourage people to support farmers and producers by buying
Fairtrade products. This year the event is highlighting the exploitation often
faced by farmers- by buying Fairtrade products you can guarantee that farmers
receive a fair price for the food they produce. The nationwide Come On In
campaign is holding events around the country to invite the public to see what
life can be like when farmers and workers aren’t paid fairly. It was great to
be able to show my support for Fairtrade in Parliament and to hear directly
from producers about the impact that Fairtrade has had on their lives. We can
all play a role in ensuring a fair deal for farmers and producers in developing
nations by buying Fairtrade whenever possible.
