Sixty years ago in 1958, jockey Stan Hayhurst from Durham
won the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup riding a horse, Kerstin, trained at a
Northumberland stables. Stan, now 84, has now been invited to celebrate the
anniversary of his win. He returned to Cheltenham to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of his win 10 years ago with his wife Patricia, and this time he
will be attending with his daughter and son-in-law. Stan’s win was particularly
remarkable as he ended the monopoly of southern trained horses and riders to
win the Cup. Stan’s achievement is incredibly special and I hope that he enjoys
his day at Cheltenham with his family.
